Promoting Quality

Transitions Committee

Across Nebraska, families and early care and education providers are seeking assistance in understanding how best to promote positive transitions for young children, including the transition to Kindergarten. The Transition Committee is focused on increasing parent and educator understanding of transition processes, strengthening collaboration among early care and education providers and public schools, and aligning standards and curricula. The committee itself is composed of stakeholders from across Nebraska who have expertise in early education transition practices throughout the state. The committee has several functions, including identifying state documents containing transition materials, examining state data on transition practices, building a resource library, and creating and implementing transition toolkits. The Nebraska Early Childhood Strategic Plan calls for building or expanding capacity within communities to support continuity for children making transitions across early care and education settings. Positive transitions from one early care and education setting to the next to create stability and promote children’s positive developmental and learning outcomes.

The Nebraska Transition to Kindergarten Toolkit and Resource Guide

Nebraska children deserve the best. School administrators, educators, early childhood care and education (ECCE) providers, and families play a critical role in shaping achievement. The Transition to Kindergarten Toolkits and Resource Guide aims to help prepare children for an successful experience in Kindergarten and beyond. The toolkits are for families, school district leadership and Kindergarten teachers, and early childhood care and education (ECCE) providers and administrators. This resource provides research-based activities, strategies, and resources. The toolkits present a shared understanding of the developmental expectations for young children and best practices to support learning and development that meet the needs of all children equitably.

The goal of the toolkits is to:

  • Strengthen collaboration among ECCE providers and public schools
  • Build knowledge among professionals in ECCE and schools
  • Promote partnerships between families, educators, and communities
  • Help align a successful transition for children to Kindergarten

The toolkits are a great resource to help build opportunities for connection and communication among educators, providers, community leaders, children, and their families so children can grow and experience new opportunities that pave the way for their success.
